Avoiding the Thailand Tummy

It can be hard to eat safely in developing countries if you're not sure what to be looking out for. Read th

is post to keep you safe from developing Thai Tummy and ruining your trip :( The Thai cuisine is infamous for its wonderful, flavoursome food and Thailand is obviously the best place to go to get a truly authentic taste! But how do you know what is safe to eat? Continue reading for a list of DO'S and DON'T'S for finding the safest places to eat in Thailand (targeted more for markets): 1) DO eat food that has been cooked For example: dumpling and noodles are fried so possible bacteria would be eradicated. Careful if your food is being cooked in water as there is potential for this to be contaminated! Take a quick scan of the general hygiene of the area the food is being cooked in and make your decision. 2) DO NOT go to a place preparing food on the floor, on the side of the road, or down an alley At Thailand's markets, there are many places to eat. However, stick to the main 'food court' area and don't wander down a laneway. Not only could it be dangerous to venture away from the main area (particularly if you are on your own or in a small group), but the chance of these places being unhygienic and not as nice generally is higher. Watch carefully as the cooks prepare other people's food before you decide to order from them. Do they wash their equipment? Do they cook the food fully? 3) DO be wary of fruit and vegetables While travelling, it is ideal to try and keep eating healthily, but eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables in Thailand can get you into a trick situation. The water in most parts of Thailand is not properly sanitised, so try to steer away from eating meals with food that should be washed. For example, when I ordered dumplings from a family selling them in a Thai market, I moved them off the decorative lettuce they were place on immediately. In hindsight, I would have asked for them to not use the piece of lettuce on my dish :) There are SO many snacks and meals that you will incredibly tempted to purchase and try. Mango sticky rice is a popular and DELICIOUS option that is a must try when visiting Thailand (although when I tried making it once back home it did not turn out like the one I had in Thailand!). Just remember to be careful when choosing where to get your food from! Have fun and safe travels! - bvb xx Remember: travel, relax, repeat :)
